Commissioner for Standards

Circa 20 to 25 days, £300-£400 per day

Jersey is a Crown Dependency, separate from the United Kingdom, with its own distinctive legal and political systems. Our parliament, The States Assembly is crucial to Island life. It is not only responsible for making new laws and regulations, but it also approves the amount of tax to be raised and in turn how much public money will be spent each year. The States Assembly is presided over by the Bailiff and includes 49 elected voting members, 8 Senators, the Connétables of the 12 Parishes and 29 Deputies. We are committed to ensuring the highest standards in everything we do, from the services we provide to the conduct of elected States Members, Ministers and Assistant Ministers.

We have recently passed legislation, enabling us to create the role of Commissioner for Standards, responsible for bringing independence and rigour to our pursuit of the highest standards of conduct by all elected States Members including Ministers and Assistant Ministers.

As our Commissioner for Standards, you will be required to establish the role and set out how, in practice effective oversight will be arranged.

To be successful, you will need to bring experience of dealing with complicated and sensitive issues, gained in complex environments. You will have exceptional judgement and the capacity to be independent, resilient and strong-minded whilst operating with the highest standard of integrity and political impartiality.
